Many African families believe educating boys is more important than girls

This student's name is Patience. She is proud to be attending school in rural Zimbabwe. Before receiving funding from ASAP, her day was filled with chores at the rural homestead - gathering firewood, cooking, caring for siblings - while her brothers attended school. Many African families believe educating boys is more important than girls. This leaves young girls like Patience who do not attend school with few options in life and especially vulnerable to all forms of abuse.

We know that girls who attend school have 50% less chance of contracting HIV/AIDS, as too often they are forced into prostitution when faced with profound economic challenges. Just the act of attending school can help a young African girl develop a sense of self-worth confidence.

Today Patience is attending secondary school and dreams of being a nurse someday. Thanks to your support, she now has hope for the future.
